Journey to the bottom of the ocean with this hands-on workshop and learn more about the beautiful unseen corals that thrive in the depths of Europe’s waters.

Let glass artist Alice Baker and marine biologist Dr Rhian Waller take you through their art-science collaborative process, and introduce you to some of the oldest and most mysterious animals alive.

Together, you’ll explore real coral skeletons and delicate glass pieces, learning about the threats these life forms face and the efforts to protect and restore them.

Join us at Kazerne and experience their artwork 'Depicting Dark Waters' like never before, immersing yourself in the otherworldly yet local landscape of the deep sea coral ecosystem.

Dr. Rhian Waller
Marine Biologist, researcher and lecturer
Dr. Rhian Waller is Senior Lecturer at the Department of Marine Sciences, University of Gothenburg, based at the Tjärnö Marine Laboratory. She studies reproduction and development in cold-water and deep-sea corals, especially how environmental change (temperature, salinity, etc.) will impact these species in the future. Her research spans the globe, from Alaska and Patagonia to the Northeast Atlantic and Antarctica. She examines how factors like fertilization, larval behaviours, and habitat structure influence coral resilience.
Alice Baker
Glass artist and conceptual modelmaker
Alice Baker, based in the Netherlands, is a graduate of Design Academy Eindhoven. She collaborates with scientists and researchers to bring complex scientific topics to life in tangible and inspiring ways. Through her craft-driven practice, often using glass and metal, Alice creates immersive works that transport audiences to otherwise unreachable places — from the deep ocean to the microscopic world — sparking curiosity and wonder about the natural world.
